Capital Brewing Co. team up with the GWS Giants to kick goals against climate change

Posted on

Kicking off the AFL season the right way, Capital Brewing Co. has teamed up with GWS Giants as part of their Trees for Tomorrow campaign with a goal of planting nearly 3000 trees this year.

If the GWS Giant’s stellar squad weren’t already set to kick as many goals as possible this season, the team now have extra motivation courtesy of a new partnership with Canberra’s Capital Brewing Co. which will see one tree planted in the Snowy Mountains for every Giants goal scored.

The partnership is an extension to Capital Brewing Co’s already successful partnership with Jindabyne-based environmental charity Keep It Cool, an extension Capital Brewing Co. was keen to combine with their sponsorship of the Giants.

Since 2021, Capital has pledged to plant a native Australian tree for every Capital Brewing Co. beer purchased in the Snowy Mountains throughout the ski season—and there’s been a lot.

“This year we’re planning on reaching our target of planting 5000 trees in total, a target we set when we launched the initiative in 2021,” explains Capital Brewing Co’s Co-Founder and Managing Director, Laurence Kain.

“Since then, we have planted a total of 2036 trees, so we are well on our way to achieving our goal in 2023.”

Last year, the Giants’ AFL and AFWL teams kicked a combined 274 goals across their seasons, but with a new head coach at the helm of the men’s team this season, they’re hoping to knock that number out of the stadium.

“This is a fantastic initiative by Capital Brewing Co who are wonderful partners of our club,” says Giants star forward Harry Himmelberg.

“The Kick A Goal, Plant A Tree program means we’ll plant a native Australian tree for every goal kicked by our teams across the season so you can be sure I’ll be trying to kick as many as possible.”

Extra trees will also be committed for special milestone moments expected to take place across the season through individual players and the club.

The goal of Trees For Tomorrow is drawing down carbon and creating new habitats for wildlife, reducing soil erosion, and increasing biodiversity and the recovery of species under threat, including the iconic Ribbon Gum.

It’s been a tough few years for the area, so the team is ready to give back to nature and restore the region to its former glory.

It’s a common theme for the crew at Capital Brewing Co., who became the first brewery in Australia to be certified carbon neutral under the Federal Government Climate Active accreditation for both its entire organisation and all its products. Last year, Capital became just the third brewery in Australia to achieve B-Corp certification.

All trees committed across the initiative will be planted at Capital Brewing Co’s annual Planting Day in October where the breweries and Keep It Cool staff will get together with the GWS Giants players to plant the trees then celebrate with a BBQ and a couple of cold ones.

Whether you head down to the snow to buy a couple bevvies or head along to cheer on the Giants as they kick as many goals as possible, the next six months are shaping up nicely—for us and the environment.
