This Bonython Halloween House has the sweetest mission

There’s something special happening in Bonython this Halloween, and it goes far beyond the usual spooky decorations and lolly hauls.
A group of local kids has transformed their trick-or-treating tradition into something heartwarming – a fundraiser that’s helping critically ill children experience moments of pure joy.
Charlotte, Thomas, and their friend Harriet have teamed up to create “The Witch’s Lair” on Tarlton Place, a Halloween house that’s raising funds for Hallowish, a community initiative supporting Make a Wish Foundation. But for these Bonython Primary School students and their families, this isn’t just about the thrills and chills of October 31st. It’s personal.
Harriett, now a vibrant young teen, was diagnosed with dual critical illnesses, Prader-Willi Syndrome and Cystic Fibrosis, at birth. This combination of diagnoses is so rare that she is the
only child in Australia to struggle with both. Her daily reality includes medication regimes, therapies, and countless surgeries and activities that most families take for granted can present real challenges for Harriet and her loved ones.
Back in 2022, Harriet’s family experienced firsthand what a wish can mean. Through Make a Wish Foundation, they travelled to Queensland to visit a butterfly sanctuary, with the mission of spotting a Ulysses butterfly, her favourite. Three years later, Harriet’s mum Melissa says those memories still provide light on difficult days.

Melissa has become a passionate advocate for children facing chronic illnesses and disabilities and she wants Canberrans to understand the profound impact these experiences create.
“Make a Wish gave us something to look forward to when Harriet was having tough days with hospital appointments, treatments at home, and just life in general,” she shares.
“Even though her wish was three years ago, we still reflect on the activities and fun we had as a family.”
The fundraiser has already caught the attention of local MLAs Caitlin Tough and Taimus Werner-Gibbings, who visited the Witch’s Lair this week to meet the passionate young fundraisers behind the initiative. The support from politicians, community members, and local businesses has been heartening for the families involved.
If you’re in the area on Friday night, The Witch’s Lair welcomes trick-or-treaters from 5 pm until late at Tarlton Place, Bonython. And whether you’re stopping by in costume or simply want to support the cause from home, donations can be made directly through the Bonython Witch’s Lair fundraising page.
