Calling all animal lovers to the Canberra Street Cat Alliance this Cat-urday

Market Stalls, food vendors, and kitten cuddles – can you name a better way to spend your Saturday?
This Saturday, 29 November, the fully self-funded and volunteer-run organisation Canberra Street Cat Alliance is having a grand opening of their new centre!
Starting as a passion project by co-founder Anna Reimondos in 2014, the Canberra Street Cat Alliance ensures the health and safety of the homeless cats on the streets of Canberra. As demand for their work increased, the alliance outgrew its previous spaces and required a designated centre for adoption and care.
“Removing them from the streets to give them the life that they deserve, [one] of indoor, domesticated, and loving homes,” is the goal of the foundation, explains Canberra Street Cat Alliance President Vanessa Parton.
Now the Canberra Street Cat Alliance has opened a new facility with an adoption space and intake facility, increasing the capacity to assist the street cats of Canberra.
And to celebrate, they’re inviting the Canberra community to pop in for a paw-some time.
From 10 am until 3 pm, there will be plenty of attractions, including cat vendor stalls, a bake sale, a sausage sizzle, attractions for kids, and so much more. You’ll be sure to find something for yourself or your four-legged friends to take home, and yes – you will be able to cuddle the kittens.
All money earned during the event – including the $10 per car entry fee – will be used for operational funding, ensuring all kittens in their care can be taken care of, and that they can uphold their reputation for “healthy, vet checked, and affordable cats for adoptions,” explains Vanessa.
Unable to come along this weekend, but still want to support the cause? No worries. Vanessa assures that the Canberra Cat Street Alliance hosts pop-up events all year around, including at Floriade’s “Dogs’ Day Out” and the Old Bus Depot Markets, whose earnings are also used to fund operations.
Vanessa says they also have hopes to add a vet clinic to the facility to allow for “a greater capacity.”
“Now people can come and see our cats and adopt from this facility. Prior, we had a residential foster care program,” she explains.
“It was a logistical nightmare for us because it was very administratively burdensome.”
Always accepting volunteers, the new facility is the purr-fect next step for the work the Canberra Street Cat Alliance does – including their fostering program and our Trap-Neuter-Return program.“We are an entirely self-funded and volunteer-based organisation,” says Vanessa.
“We always need new volunteers, particularly now with the shop and new facility.”
Rescuing up to 400 cats a year, the Canberra Street Cat Alliance is delighted to have found the new facility, welcoming everyone to visit, enjoy the space and have some kitten time even if you’re not looking to adopt.
See you there?
