Give your female friendships some love this Galentine’s Day

Posted on

Yes, you did in fact read that correctly, and no, that isn’t a typo – February 13 means Galentine’s Day is finally upon us.

That’s right, it’s the unofficial but very much official day in our calendars to celebrate our besties. (Cue: the F.R.I.E.N.D.S theme song)

Started by none other than Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec, Galentine’s day was born when she declared that “Every February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.” And so, a legacy was born.

And while there are endless ways to celebrate the ladies in your life, we have put together a list of Canberra’s best Galentine’s destinations. From drool-worthy restaurants, ‘cool’ bars and cinematic joy – here to the power of female friendship and all the shades of love that live in between. Thanks Leslie!

Eat to your heart’s content!

In celebration of throuples, (be that platonic pals or lovers), QT Hotels & Resorts is hosting the ultimate celebration of foodie love. That’s right, every booking on three at Capitol Bar & Grill will be privy to Aphrodisiac Hour (yes, it’s a thing), which includes a half-dozen oysters and three mini martinis on the house (Leslie approved).

Oh, and couples can vie for the title of ‘Throuple in Residence’ bragging rights on the night. What’s not to love?

If you needed an excuse to visit Highball’s new digs on the opposite side of The Melbourne Building (corner of London Circuit and Northbourne Avenue), take this as your sign.

Not only is the venue something of a tropical holiday but their Galentine’s Day experience will let you recreate their magical concoctions at home. For $85, you can learn to swing drinks like a pro while feasting on kingfish taquitos and chips and guac—all in the lap of luxury. Yes please!

For those who haven’t seen the Galentine’s Day episode in season two of Parks and Rec (also, do yourself a favour and go and watch it), Leslie beautifully honours female friendships with waffles and alcoholic drinks. And while Space Kitchen hasn’t dedicated their incredible unicorn waffles to 13 February (yet), we won’t judge you if you “kick it breakfast style” and indulge in a plate (or two) of these truly magical culinary creations. Did we mention there are no rules?

Located in the iconic Melbourne Building, Bar Rochford has injected some serious ‘coolness’ into Canberra. Moody in atmosphere, Art Deco in its design, your Galentine’s Day drinks just got a much-needed level up.

Simply make your way through a carefully curated wine list from around the world and your favourite memories as friends while you are at it. N’aww!

A stomping ground for Canberra’s hipsters and discerning vino enthusiasts, Paranormal Wines’ edgy atmosphere is perfect for those looking to change up the usual ‘drinks with the girls’ location.

With raw timber seats and an endless array of wines, the air fills with a rare kind of experimental indulgence. Not to mention visitors are a mix between public servants and Doc-wearing youth—a duality similar to ‘waffles and drinks,’ this time in human form.

Fill your heart with cinematic joy

National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA): The First Wives Club

An oldie but an absolute goldie. Proving that despair, heartbreak, vengeance and lip fillers can all not only come together but actually rule.

Changing the narratives of three quick-witted and inspiring women, the First Wives Club is a Leslie-style ode to friendship and the power of wives uniting as one. Oh, and there’s a great dance scene, need I say more?

Happy Galentine’s Day, lovers!
