Seven sweet treats we’re still dreaming about

Posted on

There are some desserts that you just can’t stop thinking about.

You know the ones – the unexpected surprises that had you wanting to lick the bottom of the bowl, the indulgent finale to a delicious meal and the sweet treat that you go back to time and time again.

It’s no secret that the HerCanberra team is constantly exploring the local food scene, and lately, a few desserts have truly stolen our hearts.

Here’s our guide to the sweet treats we can’t stop thinking about – and while technically no-one asked for it, you can thank us later.

Inka’s Chocolate Fondant

What truly makes a good meal (in our humble opinion) is the dessert. As the finale of the night, it’s the thing that will stick in your head long after you’ve tucked yourself into bed. And after a recent trip to Inka, we can confirm that their Chocolate Fondant is made to be remembered.

Decadent and warm, the mix of dulce de leche, miso caramel, chocolate soil and banana ice cream will have you wanting to lick the plate. And as a little bonus? It’s also gluten-free.

The Boozy Biscoff Tiramisu from The Inn

Bold and a little bit cheeky, the Boozy Biscoff Tiramisu is a twist on a classic that’s not only good – it might even be better than the original. Presented table-side in an impressively large bowl, instead of mascarpone, this tiramisu uses zabaglione as a base and uses the moreish mix of Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and Biscoff to create a well-balanced, velvety finisher.

Even if you’re not usually a dessert person, it’s well worth trying.

Good Neighbour’s Banana Bread Matcha

While this can’t technically be eaten, this is a sweet treat the HerCanberra team can’t stop thinking about. The newest addition to Good Neighbour’s matcha bar, the Banana Bread matcha fuses the umami taste of the tea with cinnamon and banana cream, creating a drink so addictive, you’ll easily finish it in one sip.

It’s perfect for cooling down on a hot day or for an indulgent morning catching up with friends.

The Buttermilk Pancakes at Recess Coffee

They’re so simple, it feels almost silly to include them on this list, but while the Buttermilk Pancakes at Recess Coffee might look unassuming, one bite will have you going back for more.

Thick, fluffy and served with butter, icing sugar and maple syrup in traditional hot cake style, you have the option to add jam, fruit, ice cream, thick cream or bacon to elevate each mouthful. Why wait until dinner for dessert?

There’s no need to choose between a buttery croissant and soft-serve ice-cream when you can have both in one bite. Recently launching their croissant soft serve, Wildflour is changing the game when it comes to ordering a coffee and a sweet treat by combining baked goodies with something a little extra.

Hitting the sweet spot, the mix of the textures and the subtle Biscoff taste create a rich and creamy yet flaky mouthfeel, perfect for a hot day.

Kivotos’ Baklava Cheesecake

With layers of filo pastry, filled with chopped nuts, and sweetened with honey, this is baklava like you’ve never had it before.

Combining the traditional Greek dessert with cheesecake and serving it with citrus sauce and pistachio ice cream, this dish delivers on every level. The crisp, flaky pastry contrasts beautifully with the creamy cheesecake, while the warm honey syrup ties it all together. And while it’s a Greek tradition to share, this is one dessert you’ll want to keep to yourself.

The Raspberry Danish from Dream Cuisine Patisserie

There’s nothing like a classic Raspberry Danish. Whether it’s for breakfast, brunch or just because, with the combination of crispy, buttery, creamy and fruity deliciousness, it’s one of those pastries that are always sure to go down a treat.

Hand-made with fresh berries and custard, this dessert is rich yet light, and sweet yet tart. Finished with a mound of fresh raspberries on top, not only is it pretty as a picture, but the balance and contrast in tastes and textures will see visiting the Old Bus Depot Markets become your new weekend tradition.

It’s not often that the HerCanberra team is short for words, but after one mouthful of this dessert, we were silent.

Giving a classic crème brûlée a nutty twist, with golden brown caramelised sugar on top and a luscious pistachio cream filling, we still have no words to describe how good this actually is.

The Gluten-Free High Tea from Adore Tea

Finding a good gluten-free dessert can be a challenge, so when the gluten-free sweet service of a high tea is as amazing as the one at Adore Tea, we sit up and take notice.

Infusing each item with tea flavours, from miniature tarts to scones served with cream and jam, it’s delicious and decadent – everything you want from a high tea experience. And when the gluten-eating guests can’t tell the difference (and you’re fighting over the last cake), it makes the experience all the sweeter.
