As we say goodbye to Cube – a cornerstone of Canberra’s LGBTQI+ clubbing scene – a new queer bar is opening in Canberra City.

ChiChiz – an upscale dive bar – is set to open its doors on Friday 19 December and is inspired by the iconic ChiChiz of Christopher Street, New York City.

Billed as “the only Black gay bar in New York City”, ChiChiz was known for focus on creating an inclusive space for the LGBTQI+ community.

The Canberra iteration was brought to life by three friends who shared a dream for creating an inclusive space that – like the New York club – celebrates queer culture, creativity, and connection.

And from drag shows to karaoke, every night at Canberra’s ChiChiz will be stacked.

Committed to fostering inclusivity through a diverse range of programming, from queer art nights to collaborative events with local LGBTQIA+ organisations, themed parties, workshops and discussions and more, the team will be shining a spotlight on the creative and diverse community.

“We believe in the power of community and self-expression,” explains Operations Director, Travis Moore.

“ChiChiz is designed to be a refuge where everyone can celebrate their identities, connect with others, and feel at home.”

But what else can you expect?

Split across two floors (with the upstairs bar available for private hire) ChiChiz is described as unpretentious. In classic dive bar style, you won’t find food there; instead, the venue is focused on drinks that are “as bold and playful as the crowd we serve.”

From cheeky cocktails – including glitter-garnished martinis – to premium pours, and zero-proof options for those who would rather avoid a hangover, the drinks menu will keep the vibes high and the dance floor full.

And to get the party started, ChiChiz is inviting the community to celebrate the opening night. Featuring live performances, exclusive cocktails, and a vibrant atmosphere that reflects the spirit of the LGBTQI+ community, it promises to be an unforgettable night. Unless you have one too many of those martinis.

Honouring the spirit of the original bar – which closed its doors in 2010 – expect Canberra’s ChiChiz to grow into a space that welcomes everyone’s authentic selves.
