The Undercurrent Design Market, organised by the team from The Curatoreum, is fast approaching and with over 50 stalls of handcrafted and unique items to wander between there is sure to be something to stick under your Christmas tree.

Here are 15 creators—ranging from fashion and jewellery to accessories and homewares—that are at the top of our shopping list.

FASHION

Shop a range of unique, handmade and gorgeous fashion pieces that will have everyone you pass asking “where did you buy that?!”.

High Tea with Mrs Woo

Traditional tailoring methods are used by sisters, Rowena, Juliana and Angela Foong to create unique shapes from conventional dress forms.

The trio practice Slow Fashion values – using materials and creating designs that are appreciated for their craftsmanship, wearability and materiality. They make sure to maintain a small and sustainable scale of production to make clothing that is worthy of care and enjoyment for a long and useful life.


Captain Robbo Adventure Pants

Katy Robison started making adventure pants after experimenting with pairs for herself, as she explored different print ideas and options, somewhere in those moments of exploration adventure pants were born.

Each print has its own story to tell, and when worn, creates another layer of life.

Wendy Voon

Wendy Voon’s knitwear combines contemporary design with elegant forms, sensuous textures and the finest yarns. Each piece is soft, luxurious and highly wearable. Helen Keogh

Designer and maker of one-off, handmade fashion textile goods, Helen’s range includes unique handwoven clutches and bags and fashion scarves for men and women in luxury fibres. There will also be a collection of beautifully hand-painted individual silk scarves to covet.

Every item is a hand finished individual piece that uses the most beautiful fibres and patterns to create truly unique heirloom pieces.

Kumo

Edgy, flattering and comfortable silhouettes with a minimalist aesthetic is what Kumo has become known for. They’re an independent women’s label founded in Melbourne in 2015 which creates pieces that can be worn and loved for many seasons. Featuring everything from overalls to skirts and shirts, a new wardrobe staple is awaiting you.

JEWELLERY

Emma Kidson

From the statement to the subtle, each piece of hand-crafted jewellery created by Emma will become a cherished item in your collection. Workshop 85

Sophia Emmett creates pieces of jewellery that are intimate, wearable constructions, where each piece is a small structural form.  Based out of Newcastle, Sophia elevates the norm with her innovative approach to materials, combined with a fascination of the relationship between texture and form.

Inspired by the influences and ideas from the natural world and the detritus of human activities, Simon’s practice is eclectic. He looks for the sweet point between reality and abstraction, being interested in the small things, the unnoticed or overlooked, because these add colour and texture to our view of the world around us.

Maiike

A bonus one for the little ones in your life grab them their new favourite woollen toy. Maiike woollen toys are born from woollen knits carefully sourced from second-hand shops. The toys have metamorphosed into many shapes, sizes and finishings over the years but the most important thing is that each has brought a smile to Aly’s face before it leaves the studio and will bring a smile to you when it enters your home.
